The week is all about helping veterans and their families focus on health and wellbeing.

Veterans' Health Week RSL Queensland

Whether it’s wandering through a veteran-centric market, taking a tour of an organic farm or strapping on the runners for a fitness challenge, this year’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs Veterans’ Health Week (DVA VHW) has a wide range of events on offer.

The initiative is coordinated each year by the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) with the aim of placing the spotlight on veteran health. As part of the week, DVA makes funds available to ex-service organisations and community groups to run free events so that Queensland veterans and their families have a chance to get together to focus on health and wellbeing.

Running 1-9 October 2022, this year’s DVA VHW will see more than 50 events being held across the state throughout the entire month of October, with a large number centred around this year’s theme, “Eat Well”.

Many RSL Queensland Sub Branches have received DVA grants to host events. These include an inaugural Sunshine Coast Veterans Market, a 3-4km walk in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast, a Freeman’s Organic Farm Tour at Currumbin Valley, a fitness challenge in Cairns, a Show and Shine event in Townsville, an Eating Well session on Magnetic Island and lots, lots more.

RSL Queensland, which has a strong focus on improving veteran health and wellbeing, is also participating, holding a choice of two events on 15 October. These events will see veterans and Defence members and their families either out on the water, kayaking on the Brisbane River, or rigged up for rock climbing at Kangaroo Point Cliffs. Check out the details here.

These exhilarating activities are part of RSL Queensland’s regular wellbeing program, Active Lifestyles, which it funds to bring veterans and their family members together for social connection and some healthy fun.

All DVA VHW events offer a great opportunity for as many veterans and their families as possible to come together in their local area to spend time with other veterans while getting active or learning a little more about nutrition and trying some healthy eating.

Don’t miss these opportunities this October.
