As the dawn breaks on April 25 each year, Australians and New Zealanders come together to commemorate a significant chapter in our shared history – ANZAC Day.

This day holds profound importance for many, serving as a stark reminder of the service and sacrifice made by those who served in the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps during World War I, and those who continue to serve their country today.

Yet, beyond the historical remembrance lies a deeper narrative – one that embodies the essence of Australia’s identity and the enduring essence of community and mateship.

ANZAC Day is not merely a date circled on the calendar; it's a testament to the resilience, courage, and camaraderie that defines the Australian spirit.

It is a day when we pause to reflect on the sacrifices of the past, to honour the brave men and women who fought to defend our freedom, and to reaffirm our commitment that we will support all those who go after us.

I write this not only as a proud Queenslander who embraces the camaraderie that ANZAC Day brings each year, but as one whose lived experience of more than 40 years serving in the Australian Army has taught me what the true meaning of mateship is. It’s a bond forged and built on trust, loyalty and solidarity.

The ANZAC spirit has become a fundamental aspect of the Australian ethos; it's the unwavering support extended to a fellow comrade in times of hardship, and the solemn promise to never leave a mate behind.

It's why the heart of our mission at RSL Queensland is to support veterans through life’s toughest moments while providing the opportunity to come together and reconnect as a community.

But through the challenging times, we are reminded of the enduring power of mateship and the spirit that embodies unity and resilience in the face of adversity. It’s this spirit that has shaped Australia into the nation it is today.

ANZAC Day is a time to reflect on the broader significance of the Australian legacy, one built on sacrifice, courage, and a commitment to our freedom that withstands time.

As we gather this year to commemorate ANZAC Day, let us not only pay tribute to the courage and sacrifice of those who served but also continue our commitment to the legacy they left behind.

Let us strive to emulate the spirit of the ANZACs in our daily lives – providing a helping hand to those in need, standing up for what is right, and fostering a sense of community and belonging.

Lest We Forget.
