RSL Queensland hosted the 2022 Indigenous Veterans’ Ceremony at ANZAC Square in Brisbane on Saturday 28 May.
Now in its sixteenth year, the ceremony paid tribute to Indigenous Australians who have served and those who still serve today.
Despite being legally prohibited or restricted from military service until 1949, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have served in every war and conflict since the Boer War. The Indigenous Veterans’ Ceremony aims to recognise the invaluable contribution of Indigenous service people to Australia’s Defence Force, both past and present.
Keynote speaker Ray Rosendale CSM, a Navy veteran of 27 years and Kuku Yalanji man, called on Australians to remember the truth of our nation’s history and honour the sacrifices of Indigenous service people.
“As a veteran, I am proud that defending our land, our country and our nation runs deep within the soul of First Peoples,” said Ray.
“This memorial service is a light shining on our national journey towards reconciliation. A strong, united nation that acknowledges all those that have served in its Defence.”
The ceremony was attended by more than 200 people, including veterans, family members of First Nations service people, and dignitaries.
