ANZAC Day: Empowering the ANZAC spirit

Our mission on ANZAC Day, as always, is to bring veterans and the community together.

We come together to remember and recognise all who have put on the uniform of our Navy, Army or Air Force and committed themselves to the service of our country.

And we come together to celebrate the ANZAC spirit of mateship, courage, ingenuity, endurance and good humour in the hope that we can inspire our fellow Australians.

This year marks 110 years since the Gallipoli landing in 1915 – a moment in time where the ANZAC spirit was first forged on the shores of Türkiye. It’s a testament not only to the selfless deeds of those who served in WWI and beyond, but also the unbroken dedication of all who have continued to honour their legacy since this fateful day.

Where this honour and continuation of legacy is most notable is our RSL Sub Branches across the state – from the NSW border all the way up to Weipa, west to Mount Isa and everywhere in between.

Our Sub Branches have done an outstanding job in rebuilding the services and marches that the pandemic largely put on hold for a few years. Last year, across Queensland, the League held more services than had been held in living memory, a testament to their determination to ensure the community commemorated, together.

Whether that number is exceeded or not this year doesn’t matter. And whether the service is attended by a handful of folks on a farm out Cloncurry way or tens of thousands on the beach down at Currumbin doesn’t matter either. What matters is that we continue to proudly commemorate and, with pride, encourage our fellow Australians to join us.

I offer my heartfelt gratitude and best wishes to all of you who will contribute to organising the services on this most important of National days.

To those of you who may be reading this and have never attended an ANZAC Day service, know that everyone is both encouraged and welcome to attend an RSL service on ANZAC Day.

Wherever you’ll be this ANZAC Day, I encourage you to attend your local commemorative service and reflect on how you can continue to embody the values of the ANZACs. Choosing to live our lives through the values of the ANZACs is a significant memorial in and of itself.

Lest we forget.

Sincerely,

Stephen Day DSC AM
