A chance to see the battlefields of WWI

RSL Queensland will partner with the Department of Education to sponsor the Premier’s Anzac Prize for the next three years, enabling eight students each year to visit the battlefields of Europe where Australian troops fought during World War I. 

State President Tony Ferris said he was proud that RSL Queensland was playing a strong role in ensuring young people continue to recognise how the ANZACs contributed to making Australia what it is today. 

“It’s important that the next generation of Queenslanders understand what our Diggers went through, and that the memory of those who suffered and died for Australia is preserved,” Mr Ferris said. 

“What better way for schoolkids to do that than by seeing firsthand the places where our ANZACs fought?” 

The eight successful students will tour important memorial sites in London and the battlefields of the Western Front. 

“Sponsoring the Premier’s Anzac Prize also aligns with our newly established online portal, RSL Education, which provides curriculum-aligned resources on Australia’s military history to Queensland students,” he said. 

He encouraged all RSL Queensland Districts and Sub Branches to get the word out to their local schools. 

“This is a great opportunity for Sub Branches to strengthen relationships with their local schools, and to share their experiences of what it means to serve in our Defence forces. 

“Applications are open to every Queensland high school student in Years 8-11. We’d love to see applications flooding in from every corner of the state,” he said.
