Join us to commemorate
At dawn on 25 April 1915, ANZAC troops landed at Gallipoli, starting a legacy that would live long after them.
The ANZAC Day Dawn Service echoes this moment, and the moment many a soldier has stood to arms.
Steeped in tradition, the Dawn Service is a poignant ceremony featuring the laying of wreaths, sounding of the Last Post and observance of a minute's silence.
Join the ANZAC Day Dawn Service in Walkerston – hosted by Walkerston-Pleystowe RSL Sub Branch – to honour all Australians and New Zealanders who have served or sacrificed in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations since World War I.
The Dawn Service in Walkerston-Pleystowe is slightly different to other locations which is important for everyone attending.
The Dawn Service commences at 4.50am at the Luscombe Tree, planted in honour of Lance Corporal Luscombe, killed in action 10 June 1917. So, it is preferred if you are attending this part to be there by 4.45am. Everyone is welcome to join us and there are road closures in place to keep everyone safe.
Only two wreaths are laid at our Dawn Service, and these are both laid here. One by the Luscombe family and one by the Mackay Mayor.
Following the service, we form up and march to ANZAC Memorial Park, led by a piper and our Sub Branch President and the Mackay Mayor. Veterans and families of veterans will follow and, this year there will be contingents from TS Pioneer and 105 (City of Mackay) Squadron AAFC supporting the march.
In the park, TS Pioneer will have mounted a catafalque party, and veterans will form up for the service. All attendees are encouraged to join the service in the park. As you can tell from the photos of previous years, the park remains empty, but we would prefer you come into the park and create a more intimate setting for the service.
At the conclusion of the service, veterans absolutely love chatting to people who have attended as we appreciate you being there.
After the service, there is a free community breakfast at the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel funded by the RSL Sub Branch, donors, and supporters.
All are welcome.
