Having just completed four years of training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, Marie transitioned to a new role at Concord Repatriation Hospital, nursing soldiers who had returned from war, including one Ian Kirkby.
Ian had served four years as a tail gunner with the RAAF and been deployed in England, Scotland and Cairo before returning home with injuries in 1945. Daughter Ros says Marie “nursed her father back to life”, and after only six weeks he proposed.

Pragmatic as ever, Marie replied, “No way am I marrying you until the war is over!” Luckily for Ian, WWII ended only a few weeks later – and the rest, as they say, is history!
Marie continued nursing after the birth of her daughter, making a part-time career in private home nursing as the family relocated to regional NSW.
After her husband passed in 2007, Marie dedicated her time to Legacy, continuing to connect with her community by hosting morning teas to support veterans and their families.
Now celebrating her 105th birthday, Marie is still as determined as ever, and a popular figure at her new residence in Gatton where she marked the important milestone.
Marie was not only joined by fellow residents, but Lockyer Valley Mayor Tanya Milligan, and representatives from Legacy and RSL Queensland.

“We’re honoured to celebrate 105 years with Marie here today. Being a WWII veteran, Marie is a rare gem, and we’d like to thank her for her selfless contributions,” RSL Queensland State President Major General Stephen Day DSC AM says.
In addition, Ipswich Legatee and Ipswich RSL Sub Branch Secretary, Debbie Wadwell awarded Marie with a quilt from Quilts of Valour to recognise her service, sacrifice and valour.
“This quilt was made by quilters from across Australia and symbolises being wrapped in love and care by our community,” Debbie says.

“It’s extremely important to acknowledge our veterans. I wish we could find everyone so they can be recognised. They represent a whole generation. To be so humble is extraordinary.”
Gatton RSL Sub Branch President Kevin Jacoby rounded out the birthday honours by presenting Marie with a WWII service certificate and a medallion for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific.
“It was a great honour and privilege for me to celebrate Marie today. Her story is very similar to my grandfather's story, so it was very special for me both as a veteran and on a personal level. A huge milestone,” Kevin says.
