In World War I, the ANZAC spirit came to define troops of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and continues to inspire our nations 111 years on.
It has since evolved into a day of profound significance for veterans, their families and the community to recognise the invaluable contributions of our Defence personnel – whether in wars, conflicts, peacekeeping or other operations.
RSL Queensland State President Major General Stephen Day DSC AM encouraged Queenslanders this year to embrace the ANZAC spirit – the spirit that has helped shaped who we are as Australians.
“While ANZAC Day began as a day to recognise those who served in WWI, it’s grown to mean so much more. It’s a call to carry the immutable values of the ANZAC spirit – courage, sacrifice and mateship – every day. It’s also an important reminder of just how lucky and grateful we are,” MAJGEN Day said.
“ANZAC Day reminds us of the sacrifices that our service members, both past and present, have made to help guard the way of life we are fortunate to have.
“Because on this ANZAC Day, we not only honour those who served. We remember who we are.”
Across the state, there will be more than 500 commemorative events, from Dawn Services and gunfire breakfasts to mid-morning services, marches and parades to recognise the service of veterans and current serving Defence members.
“Whether you’re a parent taking your child to their first ANZAC Day service, a grandparent sharing tales of service with your grandkids, or mates reminiscing on shared memories of service, let this ANZAC Day be a day to ensure the service and sacrifices of our veterans are never forgotten.”
“I encourage you to attend one of the hundreds of local Sub Branches ANZAC Day services and marches that will be held across the state.
“Every person who shows up, in their own way, helps to carry the spirit and living tradition forward. It’s the unity we hold when we gather in their name, to honour their service and sacrifice.”
“There’s no greater way to honour the selfless contribution of our past and present service personnel than by participating in your local ANZAC Day commemorations and keeping the spirit of our ANZACs alive.”

ANZAC Day is more than simply a date on the calendar.
It’s a time for Australians and New Zealanders to come together and honour the courage, sacrifice and mateship of all who have served.
It’s a call to carry those values forward every day, and a reminder of just how lucky and grateful we are.
So, whether you join a Dawn Service, pause at home in quiet reflection, or share stories with family and friends, your participation matters. Every action, big or small, honours the ANZACs and shows us that the ANZAC spirit lives here.
