RSL Queensland delivers Christmas Hampers to Vulnerable Veterans15 December 2021
RSL Queensland will this month deliver 500 hand-packed Christmas hampers to veterans across the state, bringing a boost of Christmas cheer to those in need.
The hampers are already arriving on the doorsteps of vulnerable veterans in Queensland as nominated by RSL Queensland Branch and Sub Branches as being in hardship or isolation. Some of the recipients of the festive helping-hand include veterans experiencing homelessness, those facing financial hardship, older veterans and war widows battling poor health, and those without family nearby.
Each hamper is filled with Christmas treats, gifts, essential food and supplies and a $100 supermarket gift card to help each veteran and their family enjoy a special Christmas meal.
RSL Queensland CEO Robert Skoda said packing and delivering the Christmas hampers had become a tradition for RSL Queensland staff since the initiative began in 2020 with 230 hampers delivered. The team more than doubled its efforts this year and hoped to grow the support service even further in the future.
“Earlier this month, our RSL Queensland employees came together in Brisbane for a morning of hamper packing, which is about embracing exactly why RSL Queensland exists – to improve the lives of veterans and their families,” Mr Skoda said.
“The hampers aren’t just about giving food and gifts. They’re about telling people that they matter, and that we’re here for them.
“Our team is on the ground every day supporting veterans, and we know all too well how many vulnerable veterans there are in the community.
“By receiving a hamper, we hope Christmas will be a little bit brighter for veterans in the community.”
RSL Queensland worked with its network of more than 220 Sub Branches across the state to identify veterans in-need and those that deserved a helping hand in time for Christmas.
This year, each hamper was tailored to the veteran’s individual needs, and many of the products included were donated by generous Queensland suppliers including Darrell Lea, Nerada Tea, Bundaberg Ginger Beer and Australian Botanical Soap.
RSL Queensland thanks the following suppliers for contributing to its Christmas hampers:
