  • Breakout Forum: Governance

Overview
Governance refers to the process and structures used to direct and manage operations and activities. It also defines the division of power and established mechanisms to achieve accountability among stakeholders, the Board and management.

The Strategic Governance breakout session took place on Saturday, 24 June 2017 as part of the 2017 RSL (Queensland Branch) State Congress. It was facilitated by Deloitte, and attended by approximately 150 District and Sub Branch representatives.

As part of the interactive session, participants reviewed the five governance principals that arose from the RSL (Queensland Branch) Governance Review, which took place in the first half of 2017. The facilitators also sought feedback from the session participants about potential challenges and solutions that could help inform RSL Queensland’s governance model in the future. The five governance principles discussed were:
  1. Value-adding Board Structure

  2. Solid Foundations for Management and Oversight

  3. Stakeholder Commitment and Advocacy

  4. Ethical and Responsible Decision Making

  5. Risk Intelligence

Attendees then participated in three activities:

  1. Participants voted on which governance principles were the most important.
  2. Individual groups explored what success looks like for principles one and two.
  3. Individual groups explored what success looks like for principles three, four and five

Detailed information on what was discussed is available by watching the video or clicking the links above.

  • Breakout Forum: Welfare and Memberships

Overview
To ensure support for veterans and their families into the future, the RSL’s (Queensland Branch) continued growth, relevance and accessibility to members is of utmost importance.

Programs to Enhance Welfare and Increase Memberships was a breakout session that took place on Saturday, 24 June, 2017 as a part of the 2017 RSL Queensland State Congress. The aim of the session was to explore possible opportunities and ideas to expand and support our membership into the future.

The session was facilitated by Scott Denner, RSL Queensland State Secretary, and attended by approximately 140 attendees. Scott, addressed four main topics regarding current scenarios and roadblocks in the memberships process. These four topics related to:
  1. Modifying the membership renewal process to retain currently serving members
  2. Improving the turnaround of new membership applications
  3. Identifying new projects to educate Australian families / school children about military service
  4. The model for social engagement in Sub Branches and its relevance to younger veterans

To discuss these four topics, the room was split into four sections. Each section of the room was allocated one topic and invited to contribute their ideas about how the scenarios would be improved and roadblocks overcome. A captain allocated to each topic collected the feedback from all participants.

After 15 minutes, each topic was rotated to a new section until all sections of the room had the opportunity to explore each topic. At the end of the session, feedback was collated and the information was captured by a graphic recording artist, who drew a roadmap outlining main points of the day and how that will support the league moving forward.
