Since 2013, RSL Queensland has committed $6.75 million to the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation (GMRF) to provide funding for world first research into post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

It is estmated that over 1 million Australians suffer from PTSD at some point in their lives.

The study identified the following physical health issues for veterans with PTSD.

  • Four times greater risk of heart attack
  • Higher risk of heart disease

  • Twice as likely to have restless legs syndrome
  • Three times as likely to act out dreams while sleeping
  • Twice as likely to have stomach ulcers
  • Greater risk of bowel disorders

Further detail on the study is available through the Gallipoli Medical Research Foundation.

gp education program

A national GP education program launched in April 2017 will better equip general practitioners and other healthcare professionals with new strategies to better identify the signs and symptoms of PTSD. The program includes an online education module, expert videos and a national GP conference program.
