The children of Aussie veterans will get the opportunity to pursue tertiary study with the launch of a new scholarship program this month.
Applications for each of the $12,000 RSL Queensland Scholarships, managed by the Australian Veterans’ Children Assistance Trust (AVCAT), will open on the 18th August for young people in Queensland doing tertiary education.
RSL Queensland CEO Luke Traini said the new scholarship was about ensuring the children of former service men and women would have an equal chance to excel in life.
“Providing assistance to veterans’ children who otherwise may not have been able to obtain a tertiary education will provide a better chance of employment and financial independence,” Mr Traini said
“These types of scholarships extend the welfare support we can provide to the Australian Defence Force community.”
There are thirty five $12,000 merit-based scholarships up for grabs, which span over a three year period.
Applicants must be the child of a former Australian Defence Force member and preference will be given to those in specific circumstances related to financial need, health-related hardship, or other family or personal circumstances where these could prevent them from undertaking tertiary education assistance.
The scholarship will be paid to recipients in instalments, managed by AVCAT, and can be used towards educational expenses such as enrolment fees, textbooks and computer software.
RSL’s Veterans Services senior advocate Dani Steffan said family members were often those who support veterans the most, and the scholarships were about giving them further opportunities.
“Through working as a veteran services officer at RSL Queensland, I see first-hand the impact a military career can have on families,” Ms Steffan said.
“Providing these scholarships will enable children, who may otherwise not be in a position to go on to tertiary education, to achieve a better future through education.
“I am very excited about the opportunities these scholarships will provide.”
The RSL Queensland Scholarship closes on 31 October, 2016 and the successful applicants will be chosen and notified early in 2017.
