Tewantin/Noosa Sub Branch Inc.

Introduction

Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch offers a warm welcome to veterans in the local area. The Tewantin/Noosa Sub Branch is part of the Sunshine Coast and Regional District of RSL Queensland.

HISTORY

The Tewantin R.S.S.I.L.A was formed in 1920 by Assistant State Secretary of Queensland RSL, Harry Buchanan M.M. & Bar and his comrade William Ross. Together they gathered a group of locals who had served overseas to form the Sub Branch.

In this foundation meeting, the following officer bearers were appointed: President, William J Ross; Vice President, Joseph Henry Johns; Secretary, William Fielding and Treasurer, Harry Fielding. Committee members included George Gibson, George Burgess and Edgar Thomas Johns DCM.

The Sub Branch building was destroyed by fire on 17 March, 1967 which caused an estimated $40,000 damage. It was rebuilt in 1970 and officially opened by the then Queensland Governor, Sir Alan Mansfield K.C.M.G-K.C.V.O. on the 29th August, 1970.

Now in its 101st year, the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub Branch is still continuing to grow and adapt to changing times. Its original objectives was to ensure a unified approach to address the lack of organised repatriation facilities and medical services available to those returning from service. This included looking out for the families of those comrades who did not return.

This ethos of compassion and service remains today as the motivating influence of the League. The core mission has never changed and has continued to evolve to meet the needs of each generation of servicemen and women.
